Search Engine Optimisation Basics

Basics of SEO

SEO – Search Engine Optimisation refers (in simple terms) to improving website’s performance in search engines to drive relevant traffic.

All major search engines use their own algorithms to determine rankings of websites / pages in search results (SERP – search engine results page). We can easily test to see that the top 10 results in all major search engines (Google, Yahoo! and Live/MSN) differ quite significantly. Why? As already mentioned, they use different algorithms and therefore there are differences in the importance of factors considered, such as keyword density, link popularity and internal linking. Basically, those dozens or hundreds of factors that search engines evaluate vary as does the level of importance or weight of each factor.

Considering there are hundreds of factors that search engines (especially Google) look into when analysing each of the billions of pages to provide hundreds of thousands of search results for a single phrase, to make it to the first page may seem almost impossible or at least ‘very hard’.

There are many ‘generally applicable’ techniques of improving rankings that can (and should) be applied for almost all websites. However, each webite has something unique and requires individual approach, which applies especially to link building strategies and for local & regional targeting.

In simple terms, we can talk about On-Site and Off-Site optimisation:

  • On-Site Optimisation includes changes made on the website and relate to structure/design issues and content issues
  • Off-Site Optimisation includes improving link popularity and link reputation

The main SEO challenges are related to the rapidly changing Search Engine Marketing industry, including:

  • Search engines’ algorithms modifications
  • Increasing number of online competitors in most industries
  • More and more companies using search engine marketing services

What is SEO?

SEO = Search Engine Optimisation.

Search Engine Optimisation refers to on-site and off-site techniques and strategies with a goal to improve rankings in search engines and as a result increase traffic from search engines, called organic or natural traffic.

Do you need SEO?

Over 70% of Australians use the Internet regularly. The majority of Internet users use it to SEARCH for information. Google’s search market share is over 85% in Australia .

To put it simply, every website can be improved from an SEO point of view. There may be a very few websites that ‘do not need additional traffic’, but the vast majority of websites certainly do. Imagine a situation, when even a small changes to your website may increase your traffic significantly for many months to come. SEO is a long term strategy, meaning it requires some time for changes to take the full effect, but once those changes ‘kick-in’ the benefits are lasting.

How much do you value every additional customer or a visitor to your site?
